Mark Schuler: Zebulon Baird Vance When the Civil War broke out, many men found that their loyalty was divided between their love for their country and their love for their states. Zebulon Baird Vance shared these feelings. Although he stated before the war broke out that he found no justifiable reason for the South to secede, when President Lincoln called for troops, Vance promptly changed his mind and urged North Carolina to support the Confederacy. A lawyer before the war, Vance was a man of great personal charm and wit, whose oratory skills could whip a crowd into a frenzy at one moment and then calm them down the next. During the state elections in 1862, Vance used these skills to capture the governor's office by an unprecedented margin. His term as governor was characterized by an uncompromising policy of protecting the civil rights of his citizens. Although many Southern states had suspended the writ of habeas corpus, which guards against illegal imprisonment, Vance saw to it that, while he was governor, no man was denied the privileges of this right. After the War, Vance affirmed his allegiance to the Union once more and thus one of the wounds of the Civil War, his divided loyalty, was healed. The voters, once more impressed by the character of this man, sent Vance to the Senate three times to represent them.
