Mark Schuler: Josip Broz Tito
Perhaps more than any other person in the history of Yugoslavia, it was President Tito who has commanded the world's attention. Born Josip Broz in Kumrovec, Croatia on May 7, 1892, he was the seventh of fifteen children. Like so many other peasant boys, he went to work at the age of thirteen, first as an apprentice locksmith and later as a metalworker. In 1913, he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian Army to fight Russia in World War I. Eventually he was badly wounded, captured by the Czar's troops and imprisoned. In 1917, after the Russian Communists had taken power, he was released and he joined the Communist Party. He remained in Russia until 1920 when he returned to Yugoslavia and helped organize the Yugoslav Communist Party. But it was outlawed and he was jailed in 1928. Upon his release in 1934, Josip Broz began using many aliases in order to confuse the authorities. It was the name Tito that he used most often and by which he came to be popularly known. In 1937 he became the secretary-general to the Yugoslav Communist Party, just four years before Germany attacked Yugoslavia during World War II. Calling for brotherhood among all Yugoslav peoples, he organized and led the Partisans, the guerilla troops who waged war against the occupying Germans. The end of the war left Yugoslavia devastated and in 1945 Tito organized and set up a Communist government. Tito was now entering that part of his life that was to deeply affect the Yugoslav people and their country.
