Dramatist, philsopher, critic and novelist, George Bernad Shaw was born in Dublin on July 26, 1856. His childhood was not a happy one nor was it particularly productive. After his father failed in business, Shaw's mother became the family figurehead. Failing to learn anything he considered worthwhile in the various schools he attended, Shaw educated himself by reading the works of Dickens, Shakespeare, and Bunyan. For nearly five years he worked as a clerk for a land agent firm. Having determined to make his livelihood through writing, Shaw left Dublin for London in 1876. For the next nine years, Shaw lived at his mother's expense while submitting articles to various editors who consistently rejected his work. Shaw's first steady, money-making job in journalism was as a music critic for the newspaper, Star. He later became drama critic for the The Saturday Review. During this period of his life, George Bernad Shaw began to write his own plays. His first efforts were hardly successful. One play was censored; another was so misunderstood by the actors that it did no go further than a few rehearsals; and a third puzzled actors and audience alike. It was not until 1913 and Androcles and the Lion that Shaw received the recognition his works demanded. His most famous and financially successful play, Pygmalion, quickly followed. George Bernad Shaw went on to experience world-wide fame and to be honored with the coveted 1924 Nobel Prize for his moving drama, Saint Joan.
