Mark Schuler: Federico García Lorca Inspired by the beautiful countryside of his homeland, Federico García Lorca early devoted his life to a literary career. At only 18 years of age he wrote his first book, the inspired Impresiones y Viajes. Despite his obvious love of the countryside evidenced in this piece, García Lorca soon left his home and journeyed to Madrid to perfect his litereary skills. At 23 years of age he organized Spain's first Cante Jondo festival featuring the country's most famous deep song singers. This festival, one of the bright spots in the poet's already brilliant career, produced a notable change in García Lorca's style. For years to come the deep song form permeated his poetry. In 1927, García Lorca's theatrical success Mariana Pineda prepared the young poet-playwright to pen the powerful rural tragedy Bitter Oleander . Theatrical and literary successes followed one after another and in 1935 he created what many critics name as his most inspired elegy, El llanto por la muerte de Ignacio Sánchez Mejias. However, the supreme acclaim which this and earlier works earned him was not to blossom into the long and fruitful career he deserved. In 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, Federico García Lorca was brutally executed by Franquist soldiers and soon Franco banned his books from all Spain. Thus, for a time, Spain was deprived of the works of her celebrated poet. Fortunately Federico García Lorca's works are again available and he is again heralded as a poetic giant by his countrymen.
