Early in life Elise Ottesen-Jensen wanted more than anything else to become a dentist. However, a tragic explosion in a dental laboratory where she was studying ended that dream. Thus, she was forced to change her career plans and her ambitions turned to journalism. Probably because of the tragic life of her sister -- an unwed mother -- and the sense of loss she felt at her death, Elise Ottesen-Jensen burned with the desire to write about social issues. After completing her new education, she began writing and from her pen flowed an outcry against social injustice that continued for the next fifty years. Her favorite subjects were birth control and abortion, and she fought zealously against prejudicial legislation in these areas. In 1933, Ottesen-Jensen helped establish the National Swedish Association for Sexual Information, a much needed counseling service for people confused over moral decisions. Later, under her guidance the International Planned Parenthood Federation came into being. Ottesen-Jensen served as chairman of this effort in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East and then went onto become the Federation's President. Her energies seemed tireless as she battled for understanding of the world's hurting peoples. She founded a home for unwed mothers and in 1950 established the "Popular Review for Psychology and Sexual Knowledge." Through her work, many people around the world heard the cry of the desperate and joined her effort to fight for social and moral justice.
