If not for the economic disaster that beset an African coffee plantation, the world might have been robbed of the literary talents of Danish born Karen Blixen. The daughter of a wealthy land-owner and author, Blixen left Denmark in 1914 and settled in Africa. There she married, and she and her husband bough a coffee plantation. Her marriage was short-lived however, and by 1921 she was divorced and sole owner and operator of the plantation. Blixen loved Africa and her years on the Dark Continent were some of the happiest of her life. She entertained her friends among the natives and colonists with original stories communicated verbally. It was never her intention to put her stories on paper or to achieve world fame as an author. But, as her plantation faced economic ruin, and she faced a necessary return to her homeland, she began to commit her stories to writen form. Her first collection appeared simultaneously in Denmark and America in 1934 under the title, Seven Gothic Tales. Written under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen, the collection attained immediate popularity in America. The Danish reception was somewhat less enthusiastic as her stories deviated from the natualism which had dominated Danish literature for sixty years. Her second book, Out of Africa, a recreation of her years in Africa, was released in 1937, and was a success in both America and Denmark. This was followed by Winter's Tales, Last Tales, Antecdotes of Destiny, and Shadows on the Grass.
