Born in Syracuse, Italy, Antonino Lo Surdo grew up to become one of his country's foremost scientists. When only twenty-eight years old, he lost his entire family except one brother in the great Messina earthquake. His sadness over this tragedy knew no bounds and throughout life he acquired no further family ties. Thereafter, Antonino threw himself into his work with great intensity. He taught classes and performed extensive research at Messina. In 1919, he was named Chairman of the Physics Department at the University of Rome, a position he held for the rest of his life. Though a teacher of great renown, Lo Surdo did not neglect his research which can be described as nothing short of brilliant. Through experimentation with delictae instruments, Lo Surdo disproved the theory that chemical reactions result in an appreciable change in mass. In his spectroscopic studies, he discovered that electrical fields affect the spectra of gases emitting radiation. In later life, Professor Lo Surdo devoted himself to geophysics. And when the Italian National Research Council was formed, he convinced its members to found the National Institute of Geophysics with himself as the director. Since its inception, The Institute has supported many geophysical stations and projects in Italy. In 1949, after a long and distinguished scientific career, Professor Antonino Lo Surdo died at the age of sixty-nine. His was a life dedicated to science and his death was a great loss to the entire world.
