Mark Schuler: Zachariah Chandler
In 1833, Zachariah Chandler, age twenty, arrived in Michigan ready to begin his career as a merchant. He opened a dry goods store, sleeping on the premises, and living on only $300 a year. But his business slogan, "Every customer a friend," and his good business sense soon paid off in fortune and local fame. By 1851, he was one of the richest men in Michigan and was elected Mayor of Detroit. Three years later, it was with Chandler's help that the famed mass convention "under the oaks" was organized and the Republican Party formed. Eventually, he became the undisputed Republican leader in Michigan. Throughout his career, Chandler remained devoted to the people of his adopted state of Michigan. Not only through public office did he serve them, but also through the operation of his business. In 1856, Michigan suffered from a lack of sound currency, but Chandler continued to supply his customers with the goods they needed, despite their inability to pay. His noble actions helped avert countless bankruptcies and won him the respect and trust of his fellow citizens. In 1857, they sent him to the United States Senate. There, he became known for his anti-slavery, anti-secessionist beliefs. After 18 years in the Senate, Chandler was appointed Secretary of the Interior under Grant.
