Michael Warren: Spotted Sandpiper
The Spotted Sandpiper is the most widespread U.S. Sandpiper and is encountered at one time or another along the margins of almost every pond and stream throughout the land. A loner, not gathering in flocks, it is quite unlike any other, its round black breast spots, like those of a wood thrush, and its teetering action, as through a bit too delicately balanced on its thin legs, are distinctive. Flying off, it beats its stiff bowed wings in a shallow arc. Because the sexes look identical, it was not discovered until recently that the females are polygamous and might take on more than one male, which assumes responsibility of brooding the eggs. By late summer the bird has no distinguishing marks except a light line over the eye and a dusky wedge on the side of its clear breast. However, the constant teetering, the shallow wing arc in flight and the cheerful peet-weet! readily identify it. The normal breeding range is from tree limit in Canada to western North Carolina and Oklahoma. It winters from coastal South Carolina and the lowlands of the Pacific states to South America.
