Unlike many cars of the era -- which found their roots in the bicycle industry -- the Delahaye Motor Company of France grew out of a company started in 1845 famous for its brick-making machinery. Emile Delahaye had started the company, and by 1899, six hundred cars had been built. Well-established, the company set for itself a steady pace of twenty cars per month. In 1898, the Delahaye had the unusual feature of a "bubbling carburetor" and had a duel set of exhaust cams -- one for starting and one for running. Unlike many cars of the period, the 1905 Delahayes had water cooling and magneto ignition, appearing in two twin-cylinder models and three four-cylinder models. The same model a year later so impressed the King of Spain that he bought one of the large models for himself. The importance of the Delahaye to Ireland came much later. In 1938 the Cork Grand Prix race was held in Ireland, and the important formula race was won by a Delahaye race car. Regulations for the race included a minimum weight restriction of 850 kilograms ... and the engines, if supercharged, could be only three liters while non-supercharged engines could have a four and a half liter capacity. The 1938 Delahaye Type 145 V12 was driven by Rene Dreyfus with an average winning speed of over ninety miles per hour. The sleek model had a peak speed of 160 miles per hour.
