The Wall Brown can often be found flying in gardens and loves to bask in the warm sunshine on rocks and garden walls. It has a conspicuous eye-spot on its large forewing which plays a part in protecting it from birds. Birds will usually peck at the eye-spot rather than a vital part of the butterfly, allowing the delicate insect to escape.

This painting was originally published on the First Day Cover for the Guernsey Wall Brown in the Europa 1985 Butterflies of the World set.
