Gordon Beningfield: Swallowtail Butterfly One of the largest and best-known butterflies, Swallowtails are found in many regions of the world, with most populations inhabiting the tropics. These beautiful butterflies have a distinctive coloring and shape that makes them easy to identify. Most Swallowtail species are characterized by taillike projections from the hindwings and display black and gold color patterns. These butterflies lay their eggs singly on flowering trees and shrubs. Swallowtail caterpillars have fleshy, hornlike projections of yellow or orange with scent glands that emit a strong odor to deter wasps and parasitic flies. Swallowtail species include Alaskan, Anise, Baird's, Black, Eastern and Western Tiger, Giant, Pale, Pipevine and Zebra. The Common Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is the most prevalent Swallowtail species in Europe. This graceful butterfly inhabits downs and flower-laden meadows.
