The Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is the most celebrated of all the migratory butterflies. Each autumn these spectacular creatures begin their long journey south, with other Monarchs joining the group along the way. These butterflies fly during the daylight hours and roost in trees at night. By the time they reach the warm southern regions, thousands of Monarchs have gathered to congregate on trees in closely-packed groups, where they pass the winter in a state of semi-hibernation. In spring, Monarchs fly north, with the females laying eggs as they go. The northern migration is less conspicuous, as the butterflies travel alone and make frequent stops along the way. Both the upper and undersides of the Monarch's wings display striking color patterns, making it conspicuous when flying and at rest. This unique coloring serves as a warning to predators because this butterfly is poisonous to birds and other insectivorous animals.
