Gordon Beningfield: Holly Blue Butterfly One of the many species of Blue butterfly, the Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus) is the most common Blue in the Netherlands. In fact, this butterfly inhabits almost all of Europe, except for some parts of Scandinavia. The Holly Blue Butterfly prefers wooded regions to grassland, and is a frequent visitor in urban gardens and parks. This prolific species is identified by light blue wings on its uppersides, while its undersides are silvery-gray with small black spots. The female displays wide, dark brown borders on its wings. The Holly Blue Butterfly is seen from mid-April to early June, and again in early July through the end of August. Two generations are produced during this time. The caterpillars of this butterfly feed on the leaves of dogwood, holly, ivy and strawberry bush. Other species of Blue butterflies include Pygmy, Spring Azure, Marine, Reakirt's, Saepiolus and Sonora.
