Don Balke: Blue Heron
Artist: Don Balke
Along the lake, large and glistening, the placid stillness of the waterfront is broken by bustling activity. Egrets, Night Herons and Spotted Sandpipers are gleaning the lake for food. Flapping their wings, calling to their mates, keeping a watchful eye out for their predators, these enchanting waterbirds make their home in the nation's wetland habitats. Just as Yosemite and Yellowstone are part of America's wilderness heritage, so these vast, untamed wetlands are part of a priceless national treasure. Be they one of Minnesota's many isolated lakes rich in Northern Pike and ever-hungry Seagulls or the grand Florida Everglades, mysterious home of fearsome Alligators and Snakes -- all are an irreplaceable part of the American wilderness. Sadly, as man has cleared out the swamplands to make way for the ever-growing demands of civilization, he has all too often sacrificed the land and its wondrous creatures in the name of progress. However, in recent years, Americans have shared a newfound desire to safeguard the creatures of the wetlands. They have seen too many species slip into the ranks of the endangered and others move on to extinction. Today, Americans realize that nature's delicate creatures cannot hold their own against the steady advancement of man.
