Mel Crawford: Peru Situated in Western South America, Peru is a land of exciting contrasts and beauty. In the warm waters of the South Pacific, off the coast of Peru, great numbers of fish abound . . . a fact which has allowed Peru to become the largest commercial producer of fish in the world. Just inland from the ocean is the nation's Chala region -- a narrow strip of land which stretches the full length of the country. This scorching area receives less rain than the Sahara Desert, but irrigation has helped to make some of the rich soil productive. The combination of ocean and valuable farmland has made the Chala the most industrious and populated area of Peru. The Chala plains sweep to the foot of the magnificent Andes mountain range, which contain some of the world's highest mountains. The Andes melt toward the east into a region called the Selva, which is divided into two areas, the high and low selva. The high selva consists of green forests while the low selva contains thick jungles and tropical rain forests which surround the Amazon and other wild rivers. These forests are home to such wildlife as jaguars, mountain lions and crocodiles. From the arid, desert region of the Chala to the thick, wild jungles and exotic rain forests of the East, Peru has an exciting geography which is infinitely interesting to visitors and residents alike.
