Paul and Chris Calle: 1960s - The Peace Symbol For Hippies crusading for peace in America, 1967 was known as the Summer of Love. But the following year, at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, thousands of long-haired youths were clubbed by night-stick-wielding policemen and the peace movement suffered a severe setback. Characterized by casual, folksy clothing that featured headbands, beads, sandals and flowers, Hippies were quick to flash the victory sign made by holding up the index and middle fingers in the shape of a V. Immortalized by Winston Churchill during World War II, this V sign had been adopted by the peace movement as a symbol of victory for peace and truth. Yet another peace sign was the Ban the Bomb symbol designed for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. It was adopted from one created by English pacifist and philosopher Bertrand Russell and came from the semaphore for N and D (nuclear and disarmament), enclosed in a circle representing total global agreement. The sign's meaning broadened as it was adapted by groups like the Committee for Non-Violent Action, Student Peace Union, American Friends Service Committee and others. By 1969, the use of speed, heroin and powerful hallucinogens was laying waste to the Hippie neighborhoods of San Francisco and New York, and the Hippie movement was on the wane.
