One thoroughfare in New York City is synonymous with American musical theater. Extending 150 miles from the foot of Manhattan Island northward to Albany, it's also the longest street in the world. This is Broadway. At Times Square, the entrance to the famous theater district, it becomes the "Great White Way," so named for the endless array of neon signs and electric lights announcing current runs. For three quarters of a century, Broadway audiences have feasted on slices of theater history, viewing soul-wrenching dramas such as Long Day's Journey into Night and exuberant musicals like A Chorus Line.
