Dennis Lyall: Ethel Merman Described by British critic Kenneth Tynan as "the strutting incarnation of style," able to "mold a ballad as moving as the brashest marching song," Ethel Merman was also revered by her peers. Famed songwriters George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter were among many who considered her one of the greatest talents of her era. In 1930, Merman made her Broadway debut in Gershwin's Girl Crazy, in which she performed her memorable rendition of I Got Rhythm. A true "overnight success," she went on to star in numerous musicals, including 1934's Anything Goes, 1943's Annie Get Your Gun and the 1959 production of Gypsy. However, Merman's strong, clarion vocalizations were not limited to the stage. In 1935 she starred in her own weekly radio show. Merman's talents have also been showcased on the silver screen. Appearing in classic films such as There's No Business Like Show Business and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, this famed singer and stage star captivated movie audiences as well. Her stage credits were augmented by numerous television appearances and several popular music recordings. In 1972, Merman was honored by her fellow actors when she received a Tony award "in recognition for her lifetime contribution to show business."
