Steve Ferguson: North American B-45 Tornado Airplane In 1944 American military planners realized that control of the skies truly lay with jet power -- for bombers as well as fighters. A year later Douglas, Boeing, Consolidated, Martin and North American submitted proposals for jet bombers to the Army Air Force. North American's XB-45 prototype made its first flight in 1947, and the aircraft was such a hit that the Air Force initially ordered 96 "A" models, christened Tornados. The Tornado was the U.S. armed forces' first four-engined jet bomber. During the first tension-filled years after World War II, B-45s of the 47th Bomb Wing based at Sculthorpe, England, served as NATO's primary European based nuclear deterrent strike force. But the Tornado never fired a shot in anger, and the formidable aircraft passed into aviation history by the end of the 1950s.
