Joseph S. Howanski: SB2U Vindicator Historic participant in America's victory at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942 was the Navy's first monoplane scout bomber, the SB2U Vindicator. Commissioned from United Aircraft's Vought-Sikorsy division in 1934, this all-metal bomber replaced the biplane as the Navy's front line combat aircraft. On the second day of battle at Midway, a Marine force including six Vindicators led by Capt. Richard E. Fleming attacked the Japanese heavy cruisers Mogami andMikuma. His plane crippled by flak, Fleming continued a steady dive into the aft turret of the Mikuma, which eventually sunk. Japan suffered a humiliating defeat at Midway and lost its margin of superiority in the war for the Pacific. Capt. Fleming posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his bravery, but after Midway, the SB2Us were deemed obsolete and withdrawn from combat. Artwork Copyright © 1991 Unicover Corporation.
