Joseph S. Howanski: Lockheed PV-1 Ventura In May of 1940, Lockheed received a contract from the British Air Ministry to produce 300 new light-medium bombers. Based on the Lodestar civilian airliner, the new aircraft were subsequently subcontracted to and built by the Vega Airplane Company, a Lockheed subsidiary. The Ventura first entered service with the Royal Air Force (RAF). The U.S. Army eventually received a portion of the British order and contracted for additional aircraft under the designation B-34. The Army dispatched the Ventura on coastal patrol and training manuevers. As a land-based, medium patrol bomber, the Ventura rendered valuable service during World War II. Based at naval air stations in coastal areas, Venturas located, attacked and destroyed six German U-boats prowling the eastern Atlantic. Artwork Copyright © 1992 Unicover Corporation.
