A landlocked nation of soaring peaks, placid lakes and beckoning valleys, Switzerland is also home to a rugged people of rich traditions. The Swiss cherish these time-honored customs and have taken steps to ensure that they are passed on to future generations. Certain Swiss citizens have formed the National Costumes League that holds festivals all around Switzerland where folk dancing, singing, parades, and Alpenhorn concerts are the rule of the day. When local men tune up their fifteen-foot Alpenhorns for these festivals, the foghornlike tones echo through the mountains, calling people from miles away to the celebration. The couple featured in this painting is wearing the festival clothing of Appenzell canton. The man's vest of bright scarlet cloth, is heavily embroidered in white. A colorful scarf hangs from his left hip, and ornate silver chains add sparkle to his outfit. A silver spoon earring dangles from his ear and the traditional green felt hat, heavily laden with mountain flowers, adorns his head. No less stunning is his partner's attire, which consists of a white muslin blouse with puffy sleeves and a billowing skirt that swirls attractively when she dances. Her bocdice is sewn of black silk with silk insets matching her apron. Her headdress, in the traditional butterfly pattern, is made of black tulle and lined with white lace. Silver chains and brooch add the finishing touches to her costume. The Swiss are determined to preserve customs and costumes such as these for their children.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Switzerland Europa 1981 Costumes and Native Dress stamp issued May 4, 1981.
