Gene Jarvis: Great Frigatebird When a Great Frigatebird is seen at sea, land is generally not far away. This species can fly great distances, but generally stays near the tropical and subtropical islands where it nests. In fact, because of its ability to find its way home, the Great Frigatebird has been used to send message in the South Sea islands, much like carrier pigeons elsewhere in the world.
