NLM, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dutch national carrier KLM, was formed in 1966 to connect five domestic Dutch cities. International scheduled passenger services were inaugurated in 1974, and the company now connects the Dutch cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Groningen, Enschede, Eindhoven, and Maastricht with points in West Germany, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. They also offer charter flights throughout Europe. The Fokker comapny announced plans in 1962 for a new short-haul jet airliner that would complement its F27 Friendship. First known as the F28, and later as the F28 Fellowship, it was originally conceived to carry fifty passengers over ranges of up to 1,000 miles. It was also to have a good short-field performance. In configuration, the F28 Mk 1000 followed the popular trend of the early 1960's with a low, slightly swept back wing, T-tail, and rear-fuselage mounted engines. The passenger capacity was increased to sixty for the basic model. Production of the F28 started in 1964, and the initial flights of the three prototypes took place in 1967. The first finished aircraft were delivered in 1969. Various "stretched" versions of the F28; one such version, the Mk 4000 - shown in this artwork -- was first produced in 1976. It seats 85 passengers and has a longer fuselage, greater wing-span, and improved engines compared to the original Mk 1000.
