It might be difficult to imagine a creature as swift and graceful as a gazelle ever being endangered. For these African antelope are fast on their feet and able to easily outrun most predators. By taking advantage of their herd instinct, these lithe animals of the African savannas also find safety in numbers. Fortunately, many can also live for long periods without water, a valuable trait in drought-ridden regions. But unfortunately, the largest of all gazelles, the beautiful Dama Gazelle, is one of the most threatened. Ranging from the arid lands of the Sudan as far west as Mauritania, the Dama Gazelle migrates north into the Sahara Desert during the short rainy season and south again thereafter. Like others of its kind, the Dama Gazelle varies in color and coat pattern depending on its location. Those in western Africa are reddish-brown with a white rump and white spot on their necks, while the subspecies found most commonly in eastern Africa is generally white with a reddish neck and shoulders. Once among the most numerous and widespread gazelles, the Dama Gazelle is today found with frequency only in eastern Chad. Sadly, several other gazelles are also listed as critically endangered. Among them are Pelzeln's gazelle, the slender-horned gazelle, the Dorcas gazelle, the blackbuck and the edmi.

This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover of the United Nations Endangered Species Series 29¢ Dama Gazelle stamp issued March 18, 1994.
