Gene Jarvis: Broad-winged Hawk The Broad-winged Hawk featured in this artwork is one of Grenada's native birds. Though this bird is known as a hawk, the Broad-winged Hawk ia actually a member of the genus Buteo or true buzzards. Amazingly, these true buzzards have existed for about thirty million years. Members of this genus are distinguished from other predatory birds by their massive, rounded tails and their broad wings. These powerful birds fly with slow, heavy wing movements and soar gracefully through the sky. Though they are powerful birds, these buzzard hawks often prey on insects and small mammals. However, individual birds seem to specialize in one choice prey and, to a great extent, seek it out exclusively. The buzzards have short feet and sharp claws that suit them perfectly for this life of predation. Interestingly, the Broad-winged Hawk is a forest dweller that finds his winter home deep in the Amazon region of South America. He is known as a mass migrator since he travels in flocks of hundreds or throusands of birds on his seasonal journeys. The Broad-winged Hawk is the smallest of all the buzzard hawks, measuring a mere eighteen inches in length. Importantly, by preying on mice and other small animals, the Broad-winged Hawk plays an important role in nature's balance. For this reason, many governments choose to protect this important bird.
