Throughout her history, Germany has proudly boasted many exceptional writers and journalists, and certainly ranking among her greatest authors was Kurt Tucholsky. Tucholsky was born on January 9, 1890, and died -- by his own hand -- when he was just forty-five years old. Yet, in his short life he pricked the German conscience with his pacifistic and antifascist beliefs. Certainly one of the aspects of Tucholsky's writings that made them so interesting was the author's controversial opinions. Ranging over a wide variety of subjects and exhibiting a number of different styles, Tucholsky's writings often contradicted the prevailing philosophy of a pre-World War II Germany. Tucholsky wrote his works under four different pseudonyms: Ignaz Wrobel for contemporary satires; Peter Panter for theater review, literary criticism and travel; Theobald Tiger for poetry; and Kaspar Hauser for characters of despair. Indeed, in the creations of the Kaspar Hauser pen name are revealed the emotions that led Kurt Tucholsky to take his own life. Among Tucholsky's most exceptional works are Deutschland and Deutschland uber alles.
