Eric Stemp: Royal Scots Uniforms
Artist: Eric Stemp
Throughout its long history, the British Army has demonstrated both a deep respect for history and an ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Even the early soldiers -- the Royal Scots -- demonstrated a remarkable ability to serve their country whenever and wherever they were needed. The Royal Scots, senior of the line infantry regiments, was nicknamed Pontius Pilate's Bodyguard, because of its fabled antiquity. The service was raised in 1633, and for the first forty-five years of its existence it was primarily employed in the service of France. However, in 1662, after the restoration of King Charles II, the regiment took its place as the First, or Royal, Regiment of Foot. Later it was loaned to King Louis XIV of France for two long periods of service untitl 1678. This artwork depicts the Royal Scots during the regiment's early years when it was divided into companies of Pikemen and Musketeers. The Pikemen wore the vestiges of armour, carried a pike and a short sword. Their role was to protect the Musketeers from being trampled by advancing cavalry during the lengthy process of loading, firing and reloading their cumbersome matchlock muskets. Working in unison, with ranks of musketeers behind or between the protective hedge formed by the leveled pikes, a well-disciplined infantry regiment could repel all but the most determined of cavalry charges. In 1983, the Royal Scots celebrated their 350th anniversary.
