Michael Warren: Hairy Woodpecker
The quiet calm of the woodland is suddenly pierced with a rhythmic, repetitive "rat-tat-tat" which echoes across the tops of the trees. Your gaze wanders around, searching for movement on the trunks of nearby trees. Suddenly you detect motion, glimpsing a flash of scarlet as the drumming begins again. Moving stealthily toward the sound, you finally see it, attached to the tree trunk in defiance of gravity and busily drilling for its dinner. The Woodpecker is one of nature's most easily recognized birds. The woodpecker dines predominantly on carpenter ants and larvae found in trees, rotten wood and tree roots. Shock-absoring muscle and bone formations in the bird's beak and skull allow it to chisel into the wood, while its long bristly tongue facilitates the impaling and extraction of insect larvae. Aided by climbing claws, it moves up and down the tree's surface with equal ease, and uses its stiff tail as a support beam. Once occurring freely in the coniferous and deciduous forests of southern Canada and the eastern and northwestern United States, this bird is now uncommon throughout its range and faces loss of habitat due to mankind's steady encroachment. Although an adaptable species, the Woodpecker must have forests to survive into the next century.
