Michael Warren: Lesser Sand Plover Plovers are small to medium-sized birds found in a myriad of habitats, including along beaches, river or pond banks, in open fields or dark pastures. There are 66 species and subspecies of Plover, and all are remarkable fliers. Some travel several thousand miles before stopping to rest. The Sand Plover breeds primarily in eastern Asia, from Siberia to the Himalayas. After mating season, the bird charts a migratory path to Australia and other tropical Pacific islands.
