Gene Jarvis: Gentoo Penguins With long tail feathers sweeping behind him like a broom, and his curious call that sounds like a braying donkey, the Gentoo Penguin is an amusing sight as he waddles along the icy beaches of the Antarctic islands. However, he also spends a great deal of time in the sea. The shape of his body makes him an excellent swimmer and his downy feathers form a waterproof coat so he can remain in the water for a long time without being harmed by the cold. In fact, his adaptations to live in the sea are so advanced that he is perfectly suited for his life in the icy waters of his southern homeland. These great swimmers generally speed along on, or just below, the surface of the water. The heat-conserving air under their plumage gives them a buoyancy which is sometimes a hindrance in deep diving. However, penguins usually find their food at about twenty meter depths, and they can easily stay submerged for the two or three minutes it takes to retrieve their prey. One of the favorite foods of the Gentoo Penguin is the plankton shrimp "Euphausia." This tiny animal is also eaten by the baleen whale, but since the whale's numbers have been so seriously depleted in recent decades, the Gentoo Penguin now has a field day eating his fill of his favorite food.
