Diascia is a large genus of herbs from the Snapdragon family. This large family of about three thousand species is well distributed throughout the world, appearing on all of the continents. Within its extensive ranks are some climber, semi-parasitic, and xerophytic forms. Leaves occur in alternate, opposite, or whorled sequences, and the inflorescences vary considerably, appearing as spikes, racemes, complex corymbs, or cymes. Generally, these flowers bear four or five sepals and four or five petals. Whatever the form, these blossoms are generally insect pollinated. There are many ornamental plants within the snapdragon family, and these are chiefly herbs and low shrubs. Other than a significant ornamental use in colorful flowers gardens the Snapdragon family has little economical importance. The family name, Scrophulariaceae, originated with the early belief that the herbs' deep-throated flowers had a medicinal use in treating throats ailment. The Bolao is one of these beautiful, flowering herbs from the Snapdragon family. The flowers of this plant are unsymmetrical with two lips and two spurs. The terminal flower cluster in a bright color makes the plant quite attractive. However, the main stalk never terminates in a flower. The plant's fruit consists of a roundish, pod-shaped capsule. Interestingly, the name of this genus Diascia, is thought to be from a Greek word meaning "to adorn or having two spurs," a fitting name for this two spurred plant.
