The attractive Chestnut-banded Plover with his colorful necked marked in red is a bird unique to Southern Africa. However, it is a member of a family, the Charadriidae, which has species spread all around the world. These small birds, of squat body and richly contrasting plumage, are found in open spaces everywhere: on beaches, in meadows, on riverbanks, even on mountain tundras. Like all Plovers, the Chestnut-banded Plover is a very sociable bird. This is especially notable at migrating times when the Plovers form huge flocks for their journeys. In Southern Africa, the Chestnut-banded Plover makes his migrations without apparent regularity. Though many bird species migrate in a distinct breeding season, the Chestnut-banded Plovers don't for they may breed at any time during the year. When they do decide to nest, however, the birds fly to the coast. There, in the shoals at ebb tide they can find an inexhaustible food supply that will feed both adult birds and the young when they hatch. The Plover lays two well-camouflaged eggs in a shallow ground nest. This nest is nothing more than an indentation scraped out of the sand which is lined with plant particles, pebbles, or shells. When the eggs hatch the young birds revealed are well-developed and wear a dense, spotted downcoat. Unlike many species that are totally helpless at hatching, the young Plovers scamper from the nest as soon as they dry off. Soon they will be searching out their diet of small shellfish, snails, and berries.
