Valued for his blubber, hides, and large tusks, the large and powerful Laptev Walrus is preyed upon more often than any other species from the far North. Lured to the North in hunting forays, man's initial explorations of the Arctic Ocean were in search of this massive mammal. The walrus bull, a mollusk feeder, reaches an average length of about eleven feet and weighs in excess of two thousand pounds. A walrus family consists of a bull, one to three cows, and a number of offspring. The female retreats to an ice floe to give birth to pups, thus protecting them from marauding Polar Bears. Families are very protective of their young, and adults of a herd will rally to aid a pup in distress. Unlike the seal, the walrus is found in very specific Arctic areas where warm currents flow into the ocean making the ice crack easily under a quick blow from the back of the walrus' head. Though once an endangered species, the Laptev Walrus is legally hunted by Eskimos and other Northern natives whose livelihood depends on the walrus meat as a dietary mainstay. However, it is not the native culture that poses the threat to the species, but rather outside hunting parties. Protective laws now guard the species from these outsiders and the Latpev Walruses are growing in number.
