Gene Jarvis: Orchid Orchids are one of Mother Nature's most spectacular creations. The very name of this flower conjures images of exquisite corsages adorning elegant evening wear and humid hothouses where, by the efforts of determined horticulturists, exotic plants produce delicate blossoms year-round. In the Orchidaceae family, there are nearly 35,000 species and 800 genera, one of which is the Paphiopedilum or "Lady Slipper." A terrestrial or ground-growing genus with approximately 50 species, Paphiopedilum is native to the warm, moist expanses of eastern Asia and Indonesia. There are as many orchids as there are places for them to grow and they all share one trait in common: their extraordinary beauty. The Orchid featured in this artwork, the Cypripedium calceolus is a lovely orchid, with a yellow pouch and a sweet orange fragrance.
