Through hybridization, man has attempted to enhance the beauty, vigor, and fragrance of the rose. Today, the varieties of rose are almost countless. The Bicolor Rose is one of these varieties. A variety of the pure yellow Austrian rose, the Bicolor Rose is indeed unique with its coppery-red blooms and prominent yellow stamens. This exceptional color combination is difficult to match in other roses of the garden. Blooms of the Bicolor are borne on dark brown stems along with parsley-green foliage. Surprisingly, the fragrance of this gorgeous flower is heavy and somewhat disagreeable. The Bicolor Rose, forerunner of the popular Peace Rose, is a time-honored variety that has been cultivated for almost four hundred years.

This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Switzerland 20+10 Rosa foetida bicolor stamp issued November 28, 1977.
