Erik Nitsche: Chapel - Otaniemi Institute of Technology
Artist: Erik Nitsche
Alvar Aalto dominated Finnish architectural design and theory from the early 1920s. However, after World War II, an alternative school of Finnish architecture arose. These architects aligned themselves with the more rational, contemporary works in post-war Europe and America. Among the most prominent exponets of this new style was Heikki Sirén. Typical of this new era in Finnish design is Sirén's design for the Chapel at the Institute of Technology at Otaniemi. The design is vigorous in its use of native wood as a building material. A portion of the Chapel is portrayed in this artwork. Although divergent in many ways from Aalto's work, these new Finnish designs still maintained the integral structural-environmental harmony he stressed. As part of this integration, free-standing sculptures have become an important design element.
