This artwork features the Villa Devereux in Jersey. It was built between 1979 and 1980 by architect Derek Mason. Three main materials were used in teh construction of this magnificent, modern building: Jersey granite, Welsh slate and teak. It is fortunate that the granite used was quarried locally in Jersey, as its heavy weight makes transportation costs high. Granite is valuable as a support where great strength is needed because it can withstand pressure up to 20,000 pounds per square inch. Granite is a hard crystalline rock made up chiefly of the mineral crystals quartz and feldspar. As seen in this artwork, granite is light colored. As opposed to the large crystals in granite, slate consists of tiny grains and minerals, including chlorite, quartz and white mica. Commercial deposits of slate occur in the British Islands, chiefly in Wales and in France. Welsh slate was used in the construction of the Villa Devereux. Teak, which is a forest tree that comes from southeastern Asia, was also used in the construction. Resembling mahogany, teakwood is durable and resists water. It takes a high polish and contains an oil that helps it resist insects. The strength of granite, the lightness of slate, and the durability of teakwood make the Villa Devereux not only a beautiful building, but a structurally sound one as well. Skylights were also installed to make the most of the natural sunlight. Beautifully built, the Villa Devereux is in harmony with its masterfully landscaped surroundings.
