Erik Nitsche: Cork County Hall, Ireland
Artist: Erik Nitsche
Known as the Emerald Isle, Ireland is noted for its beautiful green countryside. This island of rare natural beauty lies to the west of Great Britain, from which it is separated -- at distances ranging from 20 to 120 miles -- by the Irish Sea. This geographic isolation has helped to develop a rich heritage of Irish culture and tradition. Northern Ireland, a small portion of the island, has remained within the United Kingdom. The republic of Ireland, however, occupies the greater part of this unique and beautiful island. Ireland is divided into thirty-two counties, making up four provinces. Cork County is one of the six counties that make up the province of Munster. Cork County is located at the southern end of Ireland, and possesses the magnificent scenery of Ireland's beautiful Atlantic Coast. A prime example of modern architecture in Ireland, Cork County Hall is featured in this artwork. Completed in 1968 for the Cork County Administration, it rises through 16 floors to a height of 211 height feet. A viewing terrace was placed on the roof of the Council Chamber, which occupies the uppermost floor of the building. The Cork Country Hall was designed by architect P.L. McSweeney.
