Erik Nitsche: Our Lady of Consolation Church, San Marino
Artist: Erik Nitsche
A twenty-four square mile independent republic covering the peaks of Monte Titano and completely surrounded by Italy, San Marino is the smallest and oldest republic in the world. Tracing their independence back fifteen centuries, the Sammarinesi are proud of their traditions. However, they also welcome innovation and modernization when appropriate to the Republic's distinctive culture. Thus, when the Republic's second largest village, Borgo Maggiore, decided to build a new Catholic Church dedicated to Our Lady of Consolation, the citizens of San Marino held an international design competition. The winning design was submitted by Italian architect Giovanni Michelucci of Florence. A master of modern architecture, Michelucci designed such works as the Florence Railway Station and the Catholic Church on the Al Italian Motorway (Autostrada Del Sole). The exterior of the Borgo Maggiore Chruch features sharply linear and gently curved design elements.
