Erik Nitsche: The Nordic House, Torshavn, Faroe Islands
Artist: Erik Nitsche
In 1976, the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Faroe Islands home government agreed that a Nordic House should be built on the Faroes, similar to the Nordic House in Reykjavik, Iceland. A competition was held among architects in the Nordic countries. The winners were architects Ola Steen from Norway and Kolburn Ragnardottir of Iceland. The building itself was a joint Nordic project. The woodwork is Swedish, the tiles are Norwegian slates, the glass and iron frames came from Denmark, the sod roof is of traditional Icelandic construction, and the furniture is Finnish. Firms from the Faror Islands were selected to carry out the general contract, and the site chosen for the Faroe Islands Nordic House was Torshavn. On May 8, 1983 the Nordic House opened its doors as a cultural exchange to strengthen the bonds of the various Nordic nations. It serves as a forum for Faroese cultural activities such as folk music concerts, dramatic presentations and art exhibitions. This artwork presents a full perspective of the Nordic House including the flags of all the Nordic nations.
