Erik Nitsche: Walsrode Monastery and Town
In the year 986, a Count of Wale came upon a forested region surrounding beautiful meadows mantled with heather. He chose this peaceful landscape as the site for a monastery named Walsrode. Some four hundred years later, Walsrode Monastery grew into a surrounding town by the same name. Walsrode and its monastery still exist, and their rich thousand-year history may be seen everywhere. Unfortunately, much of Walsrode's medieval charm was lost when Napoleon's army occupied the village in the early 1800s. When Napoleon finally departed in 1813, much of the town's areas of wealth, commerce, and trade lay totally in waste. But the people of Walsrode rebuilt their ancient town, and the economy grew. Yet this quaint village remained untouched by many forms of modernization. Indeed, the timeles beauty of Walsrode inspired artists, writers, and poets with its beautiful scenery and the age-old traditions of the people. Among the most noted were poet Herman Lons who wrote about the lovely heath of Walsrode, and the famous wood-carver and painter Hans Bruggemann. Modern history has seen smaller townships incorporated into Walsrode to form a community of more than 17,000 people. Walsrode Monastery still exists today, and tourists from around the world visit this historic site and the beautiful town of Walsrode.
