Erik Nitsche: Greifentor Gate
Artist: Erik Nitsche
At the main entrance to the Glienicke Castle grounds is the impressive Greifentor -- or Johanniter -- Gate which is also the entrance to the parks of Kleinglienicke. The wall surrounding the park is intricately decorated with hundreds of perforated tiles. These same tiles were used to construct the Gate and the sloping walls which form a small forecourt. The gate itself is trellised and is lushly flowered during the spring and summer. But the Gate's most distinctive feature is that it is flanked by gilded griffins which were cast after a model by master sculptor August Kiss. The Gate is also decorated with cannon balls, the Johanniter Cross, and the initials of Prince Carl of Prussia. These decorations emphasized the Prince's rank and position as "Lord of the Johanniters in Brandenburg" as well as symbolized his title "General Master of the Ordinance of the Prussian Artillery." The Gate's construction was completed in 1862. Complementing Griefentor Gate, and incorporated into its construction was the little guard house on the eastern side, which was built in 1849 by Ferdinand von Arnim.
