For years, one of the most prominent features of the Berlin Zoological Gardens was its famous Elephant's Gate. The Gate was constructed at the Zoo in 1899 by the architects Zaar and Vahl. It was considered the true landmark of Berlin's inner city -- until its total destruction in World War II. According to believable sources, this intricately sculpted, masterfully crafted sandstone structure was one of the most greatly admired monuments in all Berlin. The Gate -- and the Zoo -- survived World War I with minor damage. But, during World War II, not only was the Zoo and almost all of its animals destroyed, but the picturesque Elephant's Gate was also totally ruined. Fortunately, old docuemnts and photographs remained. So, when the Federal Republic decided to rebuild the famous landmark gate, the architects Schaefer and Loeffler as well as the sculptor Ihle had a comprehensive and detailed plan from which to reconstruct the Elephant's Gare. The construction was completed in 1984. And, the dedication of the reconstructed Zoo landmark was celebrated on October 19th of that same year by thousands of Berliners. This representative entrance, built from Elbe sandstone, gave the Berlin Zoo a building that soon became one of the most frequently photographed motifs of downtown Berlin.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Germany 80pf Elephant's Gate stamp issued June 20, 1986.
