Erik Nitsche: Apostolos Varnava Church in Cyprus
Artist: Erik Nitsche
The island of Cyprus is in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, about 60 miles south of Turkey. Since 1974, the northern one-third of Cyprus has been under Turkish control and is known as Kibris, or the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus. Approximately one quarter of the population speak Turkish and live in Kibris, while most of the remainder speak Greek and live in the southern two-thirds of the island in what is still known as Cyprus. Cyprus has figured prominently in the history of Europe, and there have been numerous influences throughout the centuries on her architecture and lifestyle. This artwork features the modern Apostolos Varnava Church in Nicosia, Cyprus. Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus and serves as the business and administration center of the island.
