Erik Nitsche: Hallgrims Cathedral in Iceland
Artist: Erik Nitsche
This artwork features the beautiful Hallgrims Cathedral in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland. Gudjon Samuelsson and Hordur Bjarnason are the architects who began contruction of this cathedral in 1944. The church steeple, rising above the surrounding buildings, is nearly 250 feet high. Modern Reykjavik combines two opposites and seems to harmonize them. It has the charm of a sleepy outdated frontier town, but also the brisk determined air of a city that is going places. As seen in this artwork, the Hallgrims Cathedral is more majestic than the surrounding buildings, yet it maintains the classic simplicity that is characteristic of the traditional culture of Iceland.
