Erik Nitsche: Canada Postal Relics Canada's Post Office was established under the British crown in 1763. However, it was not until 1851 that Canada issued her first postage stamp. This beautiful red stamp depicted a beaver - the world's first pictorial stamp. The beaver was an appropriate subject, for Canada's early prosperity was founded on the profitability of beaver pelts. Although the issuance of the stamp made paying for postage much easier, delivering the mail to isolated settlements in Canada's wilderness remained a difficult problem. To deliver mail to the distant towns and villages, the postal system utilized horsedrawn coaches, dog teams, whale boats and canoes. A rural wagon from the Canadian Mail Service, a letter carrier from 1875, a present-day postman, and a modern mailbox are depicted on this artwork.
