Erik Nitsche: Great Britain Postal Relics
Great Britain will always be remembered in postal history as the first nation to issue an adhesive postage stamp. Introduced by Sir Rowland Hill, this postage stamp -- known as the famous Penny Black- was made available to the public in London on May 6, 1840. Featuring an engraved portrait of young Queen Victoria, this one-penny stamp omitted the issuing country's name -- a privilege continued even today, thus reflecting Britain's role as the pioneer country of modern postage. To deliver the mail, special mail coaches and mounted postmen were used throughout Great Britain. A blaring postal horn announced the arrival of the horsemen and coaches at inns and toll gates ... and warned other travelers to surrender the road to the postal messengers. Mail coaches often carried passengers as well, but the speed and reliability of the mail was the first consideration ... thus the passengers often experienced rough rides. Within England's cities, some postmen rode a unique velocipede with one large wheel supporting the rider and four smaller wheels for balance. These interesting vehicles were easy to maneuver and were much faster than walking the mail to its destination. This artwork celebrates the rich postal history of Great Britian with a scene depicting a mounted postal carrier, uniformed postmen on their velocipedes, an antique letter box, and a reproduction of the Penny Black -- the world's first postage stamp.
