To help place Canada's newly formed government on a sound base, Queen Victoria of England decided that the Parliament of Canada would reside in the city of Ottawa. Although a hard decision to make, Queen Victoria's choice of Ottawa proved both ideal and fair -- for this beautiful and centrally located city lies directly between the districts of Upper and Lower Canada. Here, in 1860, the Prince of Wales -- later King Edward VII of England -- laid the cornerstone for Canada's splendid new Parliament buildings which would house the future governments of Canada. These newly constructed quarters consisted of three buildings located on a hill -- fittingly named Parliament Hill -- that overlooked the breathtaking Ottawa River. Forming an East, West, and Centre Block, these historic buildings took approximately six years to construct. After only fifty years of standing, a ravaging fire swept through virtually the entire Centre Block. In 1919 the charred Centre Block was rebuilt. Taking almost ten years to finish, the new building revealed a strong likeness to its original Gothic architecture. The new Centre Block -- which is now used as the House of Commons and Senate Chambers -- is marked by the soaring Peace Tower.
